Oops, this was a thinko, the MAD plugin couldn't play MONO mp3 files at
all (it would skip samples, instead of duplicating them for the other
channel). I just committed a fix to CVS, please try it.

BTW, it looks like the alsaplayer-cvs mailing list is broken. I'll
investigate.
