OK, it works now.  I (re)moved my ~/.gtkrc file, and it starts fine 
now.  But...

Why is the GTK2 interface loading the GTK1 config file?

Ah, OK.  Line 179 of interface/gtk2/gtk.cpp: you should change 
"%s/.gtkrc" to "%s/.gtkrc-2.0".
