Installing libasound2-dev and libgtk2.0-dev got a compile that now shows 
alsa output plugin is there and I get the GTK GUI for alsaplayer if I 
specify nothing, but keep getting "nothing to play" if I use the command 
line or "No stream" if I try the playlist in GUI. Looks like there's 
another dev file to install before the build. The Eee is shipped pretty 
stripped down to save space, which is understandable. Will try to find 
the problem in next few days if I can find an hour or so to dig into the 
various outputs from the configure and make. Looks like I'm nearly there.
