You probably need to install dev packages for whatever audio format
you're trying to play.  For example:

libogg-dev and libvorbis-dev for Ogg Vorbis files
libmad0-dev for MP3 files (and you may also want libid3tag0-dev)
libflac-dev (and libogg-dev?) for FLAC files
libsndfile-dev for various other sound files such as WAV
