Mapping software

John

I have been using a program called Fugawi. This is really designed as
'moving map' software for GPS receivers, but it can be used to overlay cave
survey data onto a topo or geological map. After scanning your map to a BMP
image it is possible to calibrate the image. Converting the cave survey data
to a GPS track is a bit fiddly, but it is possible. Once the cave survey is
overlaid on the Fugawi map it can be saved to another BMP. This can be
imported into a graphics package for zooming into the area you want and
final printing.

We have also been using Fugawi to create road maps in Thailand as detailed
maps of the border areas are not available. All you have to do is drive
around with the GPS switched on and plugged into a laptop computer which is
running Fugawi. We have also managed to calibrate satellite photos in Fugawi
and then overlay the roads and caves onto them.

For details on the program try http://www.fugawi.com/

Regards

Martin Ellis
