Each year, BCRA presents an award for, broadly speaking, "excellence in
cave surveying". From this year, BCRA is formally offering a cash prize
of GBP 100 to the recipient of this award. There is also a trophy to be
kept by the winner for a year. The Arthur Butcher Award is judged and
announced at the National Caving Conference.
This year, Hidden Earth 2002 will be held in Monmouth in the Forest of
Dean over the weekend of 27-29th September. For more information, see
http://www.hidden-earth.org.uk/
To be considered for the Arthur Butcher Award, individuals or caving
clubs must do something to bring their work to the attention of the
judges. For a cave survey, you can easily do this by displaying it on
your club stand at the conference - or you can create a poster
describing your work. If, however, you want other work to be considered
- such as a report or publication on a surveying topic, or other more
general achievements - then you will need to make a 'nomination' in
advance of the conference for the judges to consider.
The judges will consider work that is not 'nominated' but only if they
happen to know about it themselves.
The deadline for advance nominations is 1st September. There is no
'formal' nomination form, but you can get the relevant information from
<http://www.hidden-earth.org.uk/rules.arthurbutcher.html> or by post
from David Gibson, 12 Well House Drive, LEEDS, LS8 4BX. The info also
appeared in Caves & Caving 87, p50 (Spring/Summer 2000).
Nominations for the award are supposed to be made in confidence to the
Conference Manager, Paul Mann. He is, however, notoriously difficult to
contact as he lives on a boat 'somewhere in the UK'. So you should
probably send your nominations to Wookey - is that OK, Wookey?
