Dear mapping friends
There is a Special session: BCRA grades / UIS grades: Use, limitations, improvement
in Kerrville, organized by the UISIC working group "survey and mapping".
The UISIC working group "survey and mapping" invites anyone interested to a special session on grades for maps and surveys, taking place saturday, 25. July 2009, in Kerrville (TX), during the ICS congress.
Most cavers know the BCRA grades that indicate a precision of the survey and the record of details, and in many parts of the world, BCRA grades are indicated on the maps, even in countries that have no historical link to Britain. The BCRA grades are effectively sort of "international" grades, and in Sweden they were even regarded as UIS grades, although to my knowledge, there was never formal adoption.
The aim of the special session is now to discuss the grades, to see where and how they may be improved, and to find a common consensus in order to get official UIS grades.
To my mind, the most important improvement that should be sought is the adoption of a grading for drawings (more severe than stating "details measured where appropriate") and the upgrade or abolition of grades "that should not be used".
Discussion is open - please make up your minds and come numerous to the session!
Many greetings
Ph. Häuselmann
Chairman, UISIC survey and mapping workgroup
