More than cave surveying, but this UIS message might nevertheless be
of interest...

Please consider joining up and influencing its direction while in its
early stages. Work is already getting under way.

New group - Cave/Karst Linked Data facility

A new major international project, KarstLink, has started in UIS in
which wide early participation is important.

The project is setting up the infrastructure and recommendations to
facilitate the discovery, sharing and use of cave and karst data, one
of the core aims of UIS. It is using the latest W3C (World Wide Web
Consortium) recommendations for Linked Data on the Semantic Web. This
will also involve creating a comprehensive ontology and vocabulary
describing the cave and karst data environment. It is also liaising
of course with other organisations interested in cave and karst information.

To make sure that the perspective, experience and requirements,
including security, for all countries and each karst science
community are allowed for, it is important that cavers, karst
scientists and cave managers participate early on. As Fadi Nader, UIS
General Secretary, said in his recent letter to country delegates
promoting the project: "It is important that the group has wide
international participation from both the caving and karst science
communities to ensure that its final facilities and recommendations
work for everyone."

The work is already under way, mainly at present by French and other
Europeans, so it is important that interested people from around the
world join in without delay. Further details, and links for joining
the project's mailing list and wiki can be found on it's web page:
