Simon,

R2 does not depend on the 3 letter adjustment for R1. So first, R1 and R2
are defined as

R1 = endlich
R2 = dlich

then R1 is adjusted so that it follows 3 letters, R2 is left alone,

R1 = ndlich
R2 = dlich

and lich is in R2,
