    TODO update: notes on a replacement data structure.
    
    I don't know if I'll ever actually have the time to do this, but I
    think it would have some advantages if I did: it would permit
    generation of the HTML colour bars in fewer lookups (by virtue of
    being able to do both colour->pixel and pixel->colour translations in
    log time, so you could keep switching back and forth in a recursion
    depending on whether you currently had more colours or more pixels to
    sort out), and also it would permit more choice of time/space
    tradeoffs than the current data structure.
