cygwin typically has its own root, so /usr will be %CYGWIN_HOME%\usr,
say C:\cygwin\usr. It maps the other way, so C:\Program Files\Python24
will map to /cygdrive/c/Program Files/Python24 inside the cygwin
environment.

cygwin is, I find, almost but not entirely not the solution I want for
any given problem :-(
