Hmm, libtool 1.3.5 is ancient.  xapian-core's HACKING says to use at
least 1.5:

 GNU libtool 1.5
	 libtool 1.5 is the first version to properly support linking
	 C++ libraries.  Also libtool 1.4.2 doesn't seem to support
	 --mode=execute properly.
			 
Here's what I have installed.  I'm fairly sure I built the PHP bindings
with these, but I don't have time to check right now:

autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.54
automake (GNU automake) 1.6.3
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.6 (1.1220.2.94 2004/04/10 16:27:27)
PHP 4.1.2
