Having had surveyed a number of fresh digs in Mendip recently, and then
doing updates on these, I had "pleasure" to descent with my Disto and
Samsung Note 3 into the most hostile environments in terms of confined
space, water and mud.

IP67 case for transport of phone and Disto is definitely a good idea.
Keeping them in the oversuit exposes them to mud, water and physical damage.

For the actual surveying and draing, there's no universal solution I'm
afraid, I'm just doing whatever works in the specific place.

I'm using waterproof smartphone case - made of soft rubbery and
transparent plastic, phone sized, designed to carry your phone into the
beach etc - and allows touch screen operations (see attachment).

This does work to some extent, even with SN3 stylus, and the precision
loss is not significant. That is, until the bag is wet or has splashes
of mud on it, which quickly results in the stylus being in the same shape.

The case however *does* save the phone from slipping into a stream,
which had happened to me a few times with unprotected SN3 (which it
surprisingly survived).
